Most common area for blackheads and whiteheads is a face. Excess oil, dead skin cells, clogged pores, and bacteria are common causes of blemishes and pimples. There are various options available for you to treat blackheads but it is better to prevent blackheads from appearing on your face.
Learn how to prevent blackheads
1- Regular Skin Cleansing
If you will wash your skin regularly it will help to remove dirt and oil from your skin so help in reducing the formation of blackheads. You may also use a gentle cleanser with a neutral PH. Cleansers with salicylic acid are also very helpful in preventing breakouts and keeping pores clean. Always look for products in market and grocery stores with labels (Gentle on Skin) or (For sensitive skin) etc.For oily skin, oil free cleanser is best, while for dry skin a cream based cleanser or glycerine is considered. Try to avoid bar soaps if you want to avoid clogging of pores. Better to wash your face with lukewarm water. Too hot water can irritate your skin. Don’t over wash your skin. As over washing can also irritate your skin and can lead to further breakouts. If you wash your face twice daily, it will be enough to help prevent blackheads and keep it clean.
2- Remove your Makeup at Night
If you are sleeping with makeup on your face, it can lead to clogging of pores. Use a gentle cleanser or makeup remover to remove your makeup before going to bed. You must also wash your makeup applicator and cosmetic sponges at least once in a month to remove bacteria harmful for your skin.
3- Shower following Vigorous Activities
Daily vigorous activities and exercises can lead to excessive sweating on the face, so it is better to take shower after strenuous activities. Excessive sweating can lead to accumulation of bacteria causing blackheads. Don’t use harsh soaps while washing your face. A PH balanced gentle skin wash will be sufficient for this purpose.
4- Role of Moisturizer
After washing your face apply a specific skin-type moisturizer over your face. Try to use oil-free moisturizer if you have oily skin. If you don’t know about your skin, then take the advice of your dermatologist to tell about your skin type. After that choose products which are specifically fit for your skin type.
5- Skin Exfoliation
Dead skin cells are another factor for blackheads and clogging pores. Use of exfoliator on regular basis can help clear dead skin and bacteria. If you have a more advanced stage of acne, then don’t use an exfoliator as it can further irritate your skin. Keep in mind, that exfoliators will only remove dead cells from superficial skin, these don’t penetrate deeply. Always use a Gentle exfoliator with synthetic or natural beads, as harsh scrubs can lead to blackheads and irritation of your skin. You may exfoliate your skin with a soft washcloth. Differin gel containing adapalene is a retinoid gel, commonly available over the counter product. This product can also exfoliate the skin and reduce skin infection.
6- Instructions for Oily Skin
Topical products can be used to absorb excess oil. You can use over the counter products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide for your oily skin. Weekly use of clay mask can also purify your skin and absorb excess oil. Similarly, you can also use oil blotting paper over your face. Always follow the advice of your dermatologist before using these products because these may irritate your skin and cause allergic reactions.
7- Use of Hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic Products
Always use non-comedogenic skin care products like makeup, sunscreens, moisturizers, and toners. These products which are marked as non-comedogenic will not exacerbate existing acne. If you have sensitive skin use products marked as hypoallergenic.
8- Don’t Touch Your blackheads
Don’t touch your blackheads and whiteheads with fingers, as by doing this, you may spread the infection further. You will have more irritation if you touch your lesions repeatedly.
9- Use Comedone Extractor
If you have stubborn and large blackheads, then use blackhead removal tool at home. Always use quality skin care tools for your skin. Don’t buy cheap and low-quality tools for your precious skin. Before using tools, open your pores with steam or hot clothwash. 10- Avoid Tight Clothing
Try to wear loose fitting garments. Heat and moisture can be trapped by tight clothing, which can further irritate your skin. Keep your clothes especially pillowcases clean.
11- Balanced Diet
Avoid unhealthy and junk foods especially fast food like pizza burgers etc. Well balanced diet is really good for your body and skin. Avoid diets high in carbohydrates and fats as these may slow cell turnover, resulting in more clogging of pores and blackhead formation. Also, avoid fried foods and sweets. Select fruits and vegetables high in vitamin A and beta-carotene such as carrots and raspberries. These products can increase cell turnover for healthier skin.
